The Susan P. Byrnes Health Education Center in York chose JPL Productions as its technology partner to create a unique health education website targeted at adolescents. The new website, makes learning about nutrition and staying healthy engaging and fun. The site complements the other two LearntobeHealthy websites designed and developed by JPL for children and for parents and teachers. All of these websites offer free educational games, activities, and lesson plans for teachers, students, and parents.
“When we first moved in the direction of e-Learning in 2005, we knew we needed a technology vendor with experience, creativity, and expertise in the area of e-Learning design,” says the Byrnes Health Education Center’s Vice President, Kim Shorter. “We found that – and much more – in JPL. We look forward to continuing our partnership in upcoming years as we expand the resources and offerings on LearntobeHealthy.org.”
“The partnership between JPL and the Susan Byrnes Center is really extraordinary,” said JPL President, Luke Kempski. “They bring a challenging mission, in-depth subject matter knowledge and the connection to the educational community, while we bring creative ideas, multimedia capabilities and e-Learning experience. More than half of our 90-person staff has touched LearntobeHealthy - writing scripts, designing interactive educational experiences, producing video segments, programming the website and implementing an ongoing e-marketing program to increase the site’s membership.”
The new teen website was developed in response to an alarming trend in this country: obesity rates among children and adolescents have nearly tripled in the last 20 years. LearntobeHealthy.org hopes to help reverse this trend by teaching teens to make healthy choices and incorporate physical activity into their everyday routines. The site reaches out to teens in a medium they’re familiar with, and uses peer spokespersons, cutting-edge design, video and interactive educational experiences to deliver important messages about healthy lifestyles.
The site also offers health tips, links to other online health resources, and a personal journal area where teens can express themselves, post comments, and participate in surveys and polls.
This year, the Susan P. Byrnes Health Education Center and JPL plan to add more educational activities, features and e-commerce capabilities to all of the LearntobeHealthy websites. Through these sites, students of all ages can learn to make healthy choices that will remain with them throughout their lives.
