The growth and aging of the Brazilian population, teamed with the expansion of public and private healthcare systems, are essentially driving the demand for healthcare services, leading to the increase in wound care products consumption.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (medicaldevices.frost.com), Brazilian Wound Care Dressings Market, finds that the market earned revenues of $97.7 million in 2005 and estimates this to reach $121.1 million in 2010.

Upon receipt of the above information, an overview will be sent to you by email.

"According to the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE), Brazilian population over 60 years is estimated to increase at a 3.4 percent CAGR from 2005 to 2010, while the population under 59 is anticipated to grow at a 1.1 percent CAGR," explains Tania Mito, Research Analyst for the Healthcare group at Frost & Sullivan. "As population and consumption per capita of medical supplies are intrinsically correlated, the growing and aging population is expected to significantly increase the demand for wound care products."

Additionally, the healing benefits and patient well-being are significant drivers for the wound care market, especially for advanced products. Physicians and nurses state that the healing time for the wound, in some cases, decreases significantly by 45 percent by the use of these products, while also providing physical and psychological benefits.

The Brazilian Government has recently increased public expenditure on the healthcare sector, positively affecting basic healthcare supplies such as traditional wound care dressings and ambulatory material, which in turn has raised the per capita expenditure by 40 percent. Public investments in the healthcare sector will remain stable following the new per capita ratio, thereby stimulating market growth.

However, high prices and the lack of awareness of product benefits make it difficult to penetrate the advanced market. Hence, end users should be educated on these cost benefits, through workshops and training programs.

Conversely, there are cultural and behavioral barriers that hinder the acceptance of these products. The public sector in Brazil displays a highly price-oriented purchasing behavior and it tends to concentrate its purchases on a narrower product portfolio. Contrarily, the private sector demonstrates a more balanced decision behavior that stresses on quality.

"Due to the disparity in purchasing habits, market participants must clearly understand end users to build a more focused strategy for each sector," advises Mito.

End users display a certain level – though not high – of brand loyalty, which can be exploited by manufacturers for their growth. Manufacturers can work on factors such as brand perception, quality, recognition, and others. They can achieve brand loyalty and other marketing strategies through campaigns aimed at end users (professionals and patients).

Manufacturers in Brazil have also developed pro-active sales teams to provide accurate information about products, offer product samples to potential customers, especially hospitals, and develop participative relationships with healthcare professionals.

"Participants must also focus on improving relationships with distributors and specialized retailers, particularly in regions wherein they do not have a direct presence," remarks Mito. "This is anticipated to expand the company's market presence and help seize commercial opportunities and make profit."

Brazilian Wound Care Dressings Market is part of the Medical Devices Growth Partnership Service program, which also includes research in the following markets: U.S. Topical Hemostats and Tissue Sealants Markets, Reconstructive Surgery Markets in Europe, Orthopedic Implant Market: Living in a Material World.
