Frost & Sullivan selected Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc., as the recipient of the 2007 Frost & Sullivan Product of the Year Award in the U.S. Drug Discovery Technologies Market for Bio-Rad’s ProteOn™ XPR36 protein interaction array system.

The ProteOn XPR36 system’s unique ability to independently monitor multiple cellular molecular interactions aids in drug development efforts, offering researchers a better understanding of the biological mechanisms that maintain normal cellular processes as well as those that contribute to disease development and the progression of disease.

“Bio-Rad recognized the need for an economical method to conduct protein-protein interaction studies, to screen and characterize antibodies rapidly, and to assess the interactions between proteins and small molecule compounds that often become pharmaceutical products,” states Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst Shankar Sellappan, Ph.D. “Bio-Rad used its expertise in developing high-throughput analytical instrumentation for genomic and proteomic applications to create the Protein XPR36 system in order to meet these needs.”

The multi-application ProteOn XPR36 system offers researchers a greater understanding in protein-protein interaction analyses, protein-drug target binding, and kinetic experiments based on these types of analytes.

Apart from traditional samples such as proteins and small molecule compound-based drugs, the ProteOn XPR36 system can screen and characterize hybridomas and hybridoma products (such as antibodies) used as biologic-based medicines. It generates richer data from each experiment, accelerating the understanding of cellular processes and ultimately drug development.

The ProteOn XPR36 system is superior to traditional systems in many ways. For instance, conventional protein interaction analysis often requires the labeling of constituents, which limits the number of interaction partners that can be studied. Traditional methods also demand modifications of participating partners that may affect the functionality of the analysis. The system remedies these problems by eliminating these labels and enabling real-time label-free analysis using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) optical biosensing to provide results.

“Through the use of SPR technology in the ProteOn XPR36 system, extremely low levels of analytes across a broad size range can be identified and analyzed,“ notes Dr. Sellappan. “The system is capable of measuring up to 36 individual molecular interactions simultaneously, which adds greatly to the value of this system.”

The innovative method in which low volumes of sample fluids are dispensed is an integral component of the ProteOn XPR36 system. Apart from the sample management provided by bar-code enabled chips, the system conducts experiments efficiently, supported by pumps that operate in unison, a compartment that holds ample volumes of buffer for high-throughput applications, and a unique degasser that removes unwanted bubbles.

“The system’s convenience and high-throughput capabilities highlights Bio-Rad’s understanding of customer preferences and habits,” observes Dr. Sellappan. “The company has even incorporated a light source in the autosampler platform for easy visualization of samples.”

Each year Frost & Sullivan presents the Product of the Year Award to the company that has demonstrated excellence in new products and technologies within its industry. The recipient company has shown innovation by launching a broad line of emerging products and technologies.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.
