Plentyoffish.com, the world's largest free online dating site, is now the #1 online dating site in the United Kingdom, as ranked by unique visits. The site, which launched in 2003, has significantly more traffic than several other sites that have been in the market for much longer.
According to comScore's latest rankings, Plentyoffish.com received 7,209,000 visits in the UK during the month of October, 2007. Meanwhile, the combined total traffic of all the Meetic sites was 4,397,000, and 2,100,000 for Match.com in the same period. In a sharp comparison of marketing techniques between Plentyoffish and their competitors, the company relies heavily on word-of-mouth marketing, rather than heavy online ad spending. Even with this major difference in marketing philosophy, Plentyoffish.com receives more page views than Meetic and Match combined.
"I started Plentyoffish out of my living room," says the site's founder, Markus Frind. "I knew that flashy graphics and multi-million dollar advertising campaigns do not make a good dating site. According to comScore World Metrix, Plentyoffish received 114,000 average daily unique visitors to its website compared to Meetic's 73,000 and Match.com's 45,000 during the month of October.
