RNCOS has released recently its market research report “African Mobile Market Forecast (2007-2011)” to throw light on the African mobile market. According to the report, the mobile subscriber base in the African region is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of around 13.4% during the period 2007-2011.

The research report notifies that most of the African countries prefer GSM subscription over CDMA. The total subscriber base in Africa is anticipated to increase by adding nearly 139 Million more GSM customers during 2007 to 2011 on account of increasing demand and the launch of economical handsets.

Africa continued to experience rapid growth in the subscriber base during 2005, crossing the 100 Million mark in June 2005, and becoming the highest growing region across the world by registering an annual growth of 67% by June end. However, the mobile penetration still remains underdeveloped, which stood slightly lower than 20% by the end of 2006, says the analyst at RNCOS.

The rapid growth of subscriber base in Africa is mainly driven by the excellent growth in Northern Africa and South African markets like Algeria and Tunisia. During the 12-month period ending 2006, the mobile market in Nigeria, which is the second biggest prospective market in the continent, increased by almost 67%.

The RNCOS study puts forth the factors driving the African mobile market; these factors include low cost service provider, increased penetration rate, rapid technological growth, and assistance of prepaid billing.

The report counts the drawbacks and challenges for the African mobile market, like increased licensing and electricity cost, regulatory atmosphere of African mobile market, and poverty. At the same time, the research also evaluates the prospective areas in the industry like the untapped markets, mobile gaming and lower business cost etc. The increasing sales and demand of the African handset market and the low penetration of the fixed line and mobile subscribers also highlight significant growth prospects in this industry.
