A four-day course designed to train individuals to mediate family and divorce matters will be held in Tulsa beginning Wednesday, November 7-10, 2007. The course meets the training requirements for professional mediators to qualify for the Tulsa District Court's Families in Transition program and is approved by the Oklahoma Bar Association for mandatory continuing legal education. Class size is limited.

Judges throughout Oklahoma are referring family matters to mediation in the hope that couples might resolve disputes on a voluntary basis and avoid an expensive legal battle. Mediation is a process in which an impartial third party assists people in conflict in finding a mutually acceptable solution to their dispute. Mediation is both voluntary and confidential and provides both parties an opportunity to be involved in the creation of their agreement. Mediation moves away from the adversarial nature of litigation and promotes a proactive approach to creating solutions in the areas of divorce, parenting plans, property division as well as post divorce modifications.

Individuals who complete the course will receive a certificate and be qualified to assist in resolving a variety of family and divorce matters.

The course is sponsored by the Mediation Institute of Tulsa, a private, organization that provides workplace, family and divorce mediation services, consulting and conducts mediation training across Oklahoma.

Limited scholarship assistance is available for non profit organizations. The course will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. all four days at the Tulsa offices at 1408 S. Denver Ave. For more information, call Shelly Kamm, Associate Director, at (918) 877-1427
