Based on its recent analysis of the European bioethanol markets, Frost & Sullivan presents GEA Wiegand GmbH with the 2007 European Frost & Sullivan Award for Technology Leadership in recognition of its technological excellence, superb customer support, and timely technology delivery. The company’s exceptional performance has made it the technology provider of choice for new and established companies alike.

The European bioethanol market is a growing market with a considerable shortage of plant capacity compared to that required to meet the EU Directive target blending level of 5.75 percent by 2010.

“Timely plant and technology delivery can be the difference between success and failure in the biofuels market, with smooth market entry being critical to retaining investor support and keeping clients happy,” says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Robert Outram. “With over 90 years of market experience, GEA Wiegand is regarded as a safe pair of hands, providing turnkey services to allow clients to focus on running their businesses and developing client relationships rather than managing plant construction activities.”

This experience and knowledge was aptly demonstrated in 2004 with the commissioning of three new bioethanol plants. In particular, the plant commissioned for Nordbrandenburger Bioenergy was built in an astonishing 11 months – no small feat considering it is one of the largest plants on the European market with an annual capacity of 225,000 m3 of ethanol.

GEA Wiegand technology is the most advanced on the market with features that reduce operating and energy costs, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of the plant. Such “Greener” production plants offer clients an added advantage as future EU Member State legislation is expected to offer higher tax rebates on these fuels.

Further, GEA Wiegand has a superior fuel ethanol drying technology. The drying of ethanol is one of the hardest and most critical parts of fuel ethanol production and GEA Wiegand has pioneered key technology developments and methods such as molecular sieves, pervaporation membranes, and azeotropic distillation to remove water from raw alcohol. No other technology provider has such a through understanding of rectification, evaporation and separation techniques.

In addition to its commissioning capabilities, GEA Wiegand provides a host of plant support services, from training, maintenance, operation and upgrading existing plants.

“This technology support is vital in the bioethanol market as many market entrants are often startup companies with little experience of bioethanol or running a chemical plant,” notes Outram. “GEA Wiegand also provides guidance with regard to funding and European Commission support programs; such as carbon credits.”

For continually studying and developing plant processes to suit modern markets and trends, and for its special emphasis on energy saving and low carbon footprint, GEA Wiegand is the worthy recipient of the 2007 Frost & Sullivan Bio-ethanol Technology Leadership award in the European bioethanol market.

Each year Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has demonstrated excellence in technology leadership within their industry. The recipient company has demonstrated technology leadership by excelling in all stages of the technology life cycle – incubation, adaptation, take-up and maturity – to ensure a continuous flow of improvements. By innovating leading-edge concepts the company has pioneered client applications.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.
