Douglassville, PA, United States, 2007/10/15 - Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania recently selected Healthworks, Inc., to provide specialized cardiovascular electrophysiology education program to new hires in effort to improve employee retention, increase quality of patient care.
The Hospital of the University of the Pennsylvania (HUP) has recently selected Healthworks, Inc., of southeastern PA, to provide cardiovascular specialty education and training services for newly hired nurses and technical clinical specialists and working in the hospital’s electrophysiology laboratories. This unique education program has been designed to both improve the foundational knowledge and improve job satisfaction for newly hired health professionals working in electrophysiology (EP) - one of cardiology’s fastest growing specialty areas.
Delivered during two thirteen-week periods, the accredited training and education program will use the Healthworks Essentials of Electrophysiology program as the core foundation for all class room instruction. Due to the highly specialized and technical nature of the topic and subject matter, each HUP participant in the program will spend more than 520 hours of combined classroom and hands-on – or in-lab training – with the Healthworks faculty and instructors.
Jeffrey A. Stiffler, manager of the electrophysiology division of Healthworks and the lead faculty member for the program, stated that “this intense schedule will blend both instructor-led teaching interwoven with hands on instruction for the HUP employees to maximize their learning in such a condensed time.” A nationally recognized and credentialed EP specialist, Mr. Stiffler lauded HUP’s management team for making the investment in the EP department’s new hires during their onboarding(1) process, noting that “the role training and education plays in reducing hospital nursing and staff turnover while simultaneously improving staff morale has long been recognized by recruitment and human resources experts.” He indicated there are numerous studies that detail how reducing turnover yields direct economic benefit to hospitals, citing one report by the Washington, DC-based Advisory Board that found a reduction of nursing turnover from 13% to 10% saved one 500-bed hospital nearly $800,000.(2)
In discussing the program, Victoria Rich, chief nursing executive at HUP, stated, “The hospital is committed to a culture of continual improvement while providing the highest levels of care, and a highly educated workforce is a key component of this care strategy.” HUP recently earned Magnet status, an honor based on nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice given by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Dr. Rich further indicated that HUP “chose to work with Healthworks due to its specialty expertise in the cardiovascular sector,” and because the company’s personnel division has been providing staffing services to supplement the hospital’s invasive cardiology team for a number of years.
The bulk of the electrophysiology education program will be completed in 2007 with the second portion being completed in early 2008.
