In recent years, malignant mesothelioma has crept out of the shadows as one of the deadliest cancers known to modern medical science. This aggressive disease, almost always caused by exposure to asbestos, kills more than 2,500 Americans each year. But the rapidly evolving crisis of mesothelioma is not unique to the United States. In countries such as the U.K. and Australia, where asbestos use continued well into the 1980s, the disease is leaving an equally tragic footprint.
“Australia has one of the highest per capita rates of mesothelioma in the world,” explains Attorney Jim Sokolove, principal and founder of the Law Offices of James Sokolove. “In the United Kingdom, about 1,800 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed each year. One authority predicts that the number of mesothelioma deaths in the U.K. will eventually exceed the U.S., reaching 65,000 between 2002 and 2050.”
To date, 40 countries have imposed a ban on the commercial use of asbestos. However, as developed countries have ceased or restricted its use, global asbestos producers have aggressively marketed the substance to developing regions. As a result, asbestos consumption is increasing in places like Asia and Latin America, where there is little control on its use. Experts forecast that the mesothelioma crisis occurring in the U.S., U.K. and Australia will inevitably repeat in other parts of the globe.
“The numbers speak louder than words ever could,” Sokolove continues. “It’s time we recognize mesothelioma for what it is—a worldwide epidemic. Sadly, from an international perspective, we’ve only begun to scratch the surface.”
