This lively woman from Myrtle Beach doesn’t raise awareness for just little Lindsey, her two-year-old daughter diagnosed with a rare form of childhood liver cancer. She does it for all the children suffering from a variety of serious illnesses.
That’s why Quaker and husband Wes are planning the 2nd Annual Lindsey’s Miracle Run, a 5K run/walk to help fund the wishes of children in the greater Myrtle Beach area through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Scheduled for Saturday, November 3, the event is a 5K run/walk to be held at Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach. Registration will begin at 7 am, followed by the actual walk/run. Throughout the day, in addition to the 5K run/walk, the event will include a free family fun festival with children’s activities including jumpies, a balloon artist and other performers, raffle prizes and lunch. The family fun festival will be held from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm
“Our experience with Lindsey’s illness has changed our perspective on childhood illnesses,” said Quaker. “We are now keenly aware of the impact of a major illness on the entire family. We wanted to do something for other families to let them know that we care and that their communities care as well”.
While Lindsey is currently considered NED (no evidence of disease) even with successful treatment chances of recurrence remain very high. She will continue to undergo testing every 3 months to check for new growth. If Lindsey relapses, there would be treatment available, but no cure; she would be considered terminal.
More than $123,700 was raised last year at the 1st Lindsey’s Little Miracles event in November 2006. The 2006 fundraising effort paid for the wishes of 14 children living in the Greater Myrtle Beach area. This year, in addition to granting local children’s wishes through Make-A-Wish, Lindsey’s Little Miracles will also be supporting Johnathan’s Journey, a Surfside Beach non-profit organization founded in honor of Johnathan Boyd Browning (June 22, 2003-September 13, 2003) who was born with a genetic disorder called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. This organization provides free photography services for terminally ill children. In contrast to the images of feeding tubes and IVs, medical beds and other unpleasant reminders of a child’s journey thorough illness, Johnathan’s Journey strives to capture beautiful, peaceful, priceless smiles resulting in images that are free of all sickness and pain.
During the event, the Make-A-Wish Foundation will be present with the local wish families who will benefit from Lindsey’s Little Miracles. 100% of the funds raised through Lindsey’s Little Miracles events are kept within the community and used for local children.
Top fundraisers will be recognized with awards including a 5 day/4 night trip to St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, a week’s vacation at a cabin in Sugar Mountain, NC, and a trip to Washington DC.

About Lindsey’s Little Miracles
Lindsey’s Little Miracles is a non-profit organization established by Wes and Quaker Grubbs of Myrtle Beach, SC. At just 12 months old and weighing only 15 lbs. their daughter, Lindsey Clair, was diagnosed with Stage IV Hepatoblastoma, a very rare form of pediatric liver cancer. The prayer for Lindsey would become that of asking for little miracles, hoping for one more day of survival. With the belief that being given a blessing means you should turn and bless another, Lindsey’s Little Miracles was born. Their mission is to raise the community’s awareness of other local children living with terminal illnesses, to educate the public about childhood cancer and to impact the lives of other families with “little miracles”. Lindsey’s father Wes would begin the movement with a $25,000 donation through his company, Beach Automotive Group.
