Half-Pint Designs, which began as a small, local home business, now distributes products to boutiques in 6 states. Half Pint Designs specializes in creating high quality, custom baby essentials such as trendy bibs, soft burp blankets, snuggly patchwork luvees and comfortable changing pads, just to name a few. Handmade with extra special care, all of Half-Pint Designs products prove to be stylish, dependable and durable.
Half-Pint Designs, founded by Kimi Cole-Schmolke in 2004, derived its name from its founder’s nickname of “Half-Pint”, since Cole-Schmolke stands only five feet tall in heels! Cole-Schmolke began producing aprons in 2002 from a design she and her mother created for her two-year-old niece. Her first apron, derived from a simple sketch on a newspaper, became Cole-Schmolke’s own original template, from which she began creating kids aprons. As the demand for these aprons became apparent, Cole-Schmolke then added adult aprons to her selection. Eventually, Cole-Schmolke branched out into baby essentials. Now, she even creates bath goods, bath wraps, towels, bath mats and home decor, such as pillows, blanket throws for adults, table cloths, tea towels and Christmas stockings!
“I take extra time to ensure I create only the best quality, safest product people can buy,” states Cole-Schmolke, “Most of my client base comes from repeat customers, which is the greatest compliment anyone could ask for!”
“I received an adorable bib, burp cloth and changing pad set as a baby shower gift for my second son,” says Orlando, Florida mom, Michelle Stevens, “Not only have I received numerous compliments on the ensemble, but it was so resilient! I wish I knew about Half-Pint Designs when I had my first son.”
“The first time I saw the products by Half-Pint Designs, I fell in love with them,” says Jennifer Holmes of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, “I purchased a pillow as a gift and two blankets for my children. My daughter loved the pillow so much that I just had to go back and purchase one for her, too. She has never been attached to anything before, but her blanket goes back and forth from home and school everyday. I own a boutique, and I now sell several of Half-Pint Designs products in my store. They are high-quality and very unique…My customers love them as much as I do!”
Cole-Schmolke, a former Marketing Executive who previously worked in multiple Florida and South Carolina markets, enjoys operating a home-based business. Though she works hard, the flexibility of owning her own business affords her the opportunity to accommodate the growing needs of her four-year-old daughter, Hannah Rae.
“I started this business because I always wanted to design, produce and market something that was of my own, my own ‘brand’ or ‘label’,” explains Cole-Schmolke, “Being a new mom, it was hard to find quality goods for my little girl at a reasonable price so I started Half-Pint Designs.”
For the past 3 years, Cole-Schmolke handmade everything herself. Recently, she began taking wholesale orders and has enlisted some assistance to help with production.
“I still make much of the merchandise myself”, explains Cole-Schmolke, “I am very choosy with my fabric. I order it from a company in the U.S. which designs and prints all of their fabric here in the U.S.”.
Cole-Schmolke would like to expand into 500 + stores over the next couple of years, with the flagship store in Charleston.
Half-Pint Designs offers a wide assortment of custom baby gift ideas, as well as unique items for children and beautiful home décor selections. Half-Pint Designs products are also sold at popular open-air market in downtown Charleston, and at various specialty stores in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Texas and Mississippi.
