Energy researchers and scientists from Australia, Europe and the United States are set to unveil a new communications and sensor platform that significantly reduces the financial burden on energy companies when adapting smart energy grid monitoring technologies, potentially saving energy providers billions in future fees and expenditures.

Dubbed the G-Spot Super Node for the (802.11g) protocol it uses, and developed by Australian Communications Company Telepathx Ltd, the multi frequency wireless platform uses a one of several innovations called communications aggregation. Communications aggregation said market analyst April Sommers allows the company to go beyond the energy grid and consolidate large numbers of revenue generating asset monitoring services onto a single wireless operating platform, it’s the first such platform that we have seen that is capable of circumventing local exchange carriers in such a manner, and will be a big hit. This consolidation model Sommers added; is significant to the energy suppliers because it reduces the overall investment and fees needed by utilities and energy companies by as much as 80%.

It also turns a ten year ROI (return on investment) on demand response technology into an unregulated cash positive venture the day it’s installed. The real benefits however are its unprecedented self managing intelligence capabilities, this system that tells managers when, where and what’s having a problem with pinpoint location accuracy removing any guessing games on finding potential faults, This level of intelligence on underground and overhead assets increases the quality of power and significantly reduces power outages and generation needs all while increasing energy companies profits, “A smart grid is an efficient grid” Sommers added; and if technology can reduce generation needs by a few percentage points it’s good for everyone and even better for the environment.

Telepathx spent the last four years developing low cost re-active RFID (radio frequency identification) sensing technology specifically for the distribution grid and it’s now working with some of the worlds top tier switchgear manufacturers on embedding the technology. They are definitely seen as a driving force of a simple yet evolutionary trend in developing intelligent next generation energy products. Telepathx Chairman and CEO James Eades said ‘we are now at a point where we feel we can have maximum impact on the entire energy industry, and our goal is to just get this technology out to energy companies at little or no cost. There is also a distinct possibility of carbon credits being issued to energy companies whom adapt the energy efficient technology.

Telepathx has already developed a number of innovative sensing technologies to monitor accidents, fires and consumer and industrial alarm systems, but it now working on integrating AMR (Automated Meter Reading) services for electric, water and gas utilities. Details on the project are available to energy suppliers, developers and switchgear OEMs in preparation for its 2008 rollout and can be obtained by contacting the company at develop[.]telepathx dot com or visiting the Telepathx website.

Telepathx Ltd is at the forefront of reactive sensor network technology and is leading the effort in developing the world’s first intelligent energy network in Australia where they will provide community bushfire and auto collision monitoring services from fixed RFID access points.
