The SYM system will work as an integrated solution for managing slabs throughout the whole process in the slab yard. The project will cover the entire slab yard area, from the entry of the slabs into the plant (by train) to the charging of the HSM’s reheating furnaces.
Detailed information about each material unit will be managed as well as the modifications due to additional treatment or thermal conservation. The SYM system will also optimize slab movements such as train unloading, piling and re-piling, and load carrier loading and off-loading. The transport tracking of the load carriers by truck will also be managed. Users will be able to rely on quick and permanent access to all data generated before and after material treatments as well as having an overview of tasks to be done in the near future. The system will be fully integrated with SSAB’s other IT systems, cranes, and load carriers/trucks equipment.
Mr. Lars-Erik Stenberg, Project Manager of SSAB says: “This project will allow us to handle larger volumes of slabs with less manual workload and higher quality on the existing slab yard areas. We are convinced that it will succeed and that we can reduce the number of employees and still be better and handle larger volumes. We seek to achieve more efficient usage of our limited space for slabs and minimize crane/slabs movement.”
Upon go-live of the system, the SYM system will offer a complete view of the inventory allowing ease in locating any slab at any time, fast and accurate execution of material transport, and decrease of material damages by reducing the number of transports.
The project started in Q2 2007 and is due to finish in March 2008.
