MTD Studios will soon unleash a terrifying experience known as Bloody 27. The horror film has begun principal photography throughout South and Central Florida and is slated for a 2008 theatrical release.
Bloody 27 promises a fresh new story with plenty of twists along the way. For years, people have gone missing on a lonely stretch of desolate highway. The locals have nicknamed South Highway 27 as Bloody 27 because of all the fatalities that have occurred there. But outsiders had little knowledge of the frightening truth that really haunts the desolate highway.
Caught in the middle of the terror is Jenny (portrayed by Annalisa Kyler), a shy young woman taking a road trip to visit her family. When she goes missing, her friends vow to form a search party to track her down. Kyler sums it up, "This is going to be so exciting! This movie is loaded with great action." Whether you love the riveting terror sequences or the Florida history woven into the story, Bloody 27 promises a lot of twists and turns.
Actress Tara Cardinal who recently starred in the Warner Brother"s film Delivery, will play a young executive named Sandy in Bloody 27. Cardinal adds this about the new film: "Horror films are great, because as an actor, you get to play more on the drama side of the coin. Nothing is more exciting than fighting for your life, which is the core of most horror films. I"m expecting a lot of fun, hard work, and some great stunts."
Jenny"s friends and family quickly come to her aid. Lead the heroic Doug (portrayed by Martin Seijo), the group of young adults rushes to form a search party. Seijo describes the upcoming film, "This will be my first time [in a horror film] and so far it seems likes it"s going to be a lot of fun to make. I believe audiences are going to like it. Its not just a slasher/gore film, there is some humor. The funny parts really are funny and witty."
Veteran independent film actors Kevin J. O"Neill, Todd Thompson, Allan Medina and Michael Thomas Dunn round out the cast. Actress Illana Cohen says of her character, Lauren, “I already love Lauren. She seems like the kind of person I would want to be friends with in real life. Despite undergoing great personal loss, she has managed to maintain her parents" hotel and make a living for herself. She has also preserved her natural cheerfulness and empathy, rather than becoming overly tough or cynical."
Also starring in the film is Tracy Nova as Vanessa. "We are incredibly lucky to have found Tracy. She brings an energy to the role unmatched by anyone. She"s strong yet vulnerable. She"s smart and sexy. Honestly, Tracy has a huge career ahead of her; we really think she"s gonna be the next Jessica Alba," says Executive Producer Gabriel C. Pitts. Director Michael Thomas Dunn adds, "Yeah, Tracy really wowed everyone at the auditions. She really did make the Vanessa character her own."
Jamie Belanger portrays Michelle, a tough young girl who is also caught up in the madness. Belanger says of her character, "She is smart, pretty, and kind, with everything going for her. Nothing really bad has happened in her life, and because she"s young, she believes nothing ever will. She has her whole life ahead of her, and it"s bright and promising." Belanger compares Michelle to the character she portrayed in the 2004 feature film Alone and Restless, "One way in which they are similar, unfortunately, is that they both end up in the wrong place at the wrong time."
Unlike most horror films, the location plays a big role in establishing the mood of Bloody 27. The film is loosely tied to Florida"s history and along takes place the infamous stretch of Highway 27 near the Everglades. Cinematographer Ashton Bracciodieta plans to use the gritty locations to establish the film"s tone. Bracciodieta says, "The density of the surrounding swamps will lend a great hand to the tone of the film. Then there is the weather. The unforgiving Florida weather is also an exciting factor. From the morning fogs, the extreme heat of midday to the chilly winds at night, the weather will enhance the film."
Dunn is also enthusiastic about the unique elements of the story. "I think what will make this film stand out is its dedication to realism. We"re trying some experimental narrative elements that I don"t think have been attempted in a horror film," says Dunn. Executive Producer Gabriel Pitts adds, "You know this film is a departure from what the horror genre has usually seen. It really incorporates some innovative storytelling by mixing suspense-genre elements with a little comedy. I think audiences will really respond to it."
Actress Ilana Cohen sums it up best: “I do like the emphasis on realism in Bloody 27. Films with connections to actual folklore and history are always the most potent." Dunn is often asked often about his dual roles as both director and actor in his films. He responds, "You know, I originally never thought I"d act. But now, its become a signature that I make at least a cameo in my films. It"s like my stamp of approval; it"s a way to show that I"m proud of the films I"ve directed."
The Alex Frielings Company will handle the Dolby Digital audio mix and soundtrack for the upcoming feature film. As sound producer, Frielings is excited by the great opportunity that the film presents. Frielings remarks, "Sound in horror films is to me more important than any other genre only because its not easy to scare people when they are perfectly safe in their theater seats; and as the story goes, sound is fifty percent of any movie!" Bloody 27 will be executive produced by Gabriel C. Pitts and directed by independent film director Michael Thomas Dunn. Cinematography will be handled by Ashton Bracciodieta.
