With the heavyweights successfully holding on to their market shares, the smaller companies are battling it out for the remaining stakes in the European defibrillators market. Stringent laws in a highly concentrated market have not made it any easier on the small enterprises; however, they may be able to make the cut through alliances with international manufacturers and emerging companies.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (medicaldevices.frost.com), European External Defibrillators Market, finds that the market earned revenue of $296.0 million in 2006. This is expected to reach $440.0 million in 2013.

It is vital for companies with minor shares to forge alliances with businesses that can help them improve sales, distribution and market share. This will create a more level playing field and therefore, raise the number of competitors and devices.

The surfeit of products augurs well for the market, as it will ultimately facilitate the offer of affordable defibrillators. This trend, backed by technological advances, has stirred considerable consumer interest - especially in healthcare centres that are short staffed. These sophisticated devices are a huge help in improving the quality of treatment and patient monitoring.

"Until recently, wider deployment of defibrillators had been constrained by deficiencies in automated external defibrillators (AED) technology, including extensive daily maintenance, technical complexity and high cost," notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Janani Narasimhan. "Technological developments have solved these shortcomings and has revolutionised the treatment of sudden cardiac arrest by making it practical, efficient and reasonably priced."

European governments are promoting the wide deployment of defibrillators among first-response personnel. Hence, these products are finding greater uptake for installation in first-response vehicles and use among an expanded group of physician-authorised responders such as emergency medical technicians, fire service personnel, police officers, flight attendants and safety officers.

"Prompt defibrillation can be achieved only through proper training, which should include basic instruction on life support and AED skills," notes Narasimhan. "In order to establish an effective external defibrillator programme, attempts should be made to acquire exhaustive data on the prevalence of sudden cardiac death (SCDs) in the community."

Apart from training technicians, market participants must also work on improving the public’s awareness about occurrence of sudden cardiac arrests and hence, the importance of defibrillators. By educating this user group, defibrillator companies could expand their scope and experience tremendous growth in the commercial and public access markets.
