The Bay Area Alumni Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS-SF) completed an evening of packing boxes of school supplies destined to Bay Area teachers on Friday, September 7th under the auspices of the non-profit TrueGift, Inc. Volunteers from BGS-SF gathered with other volunteers from TrueGift to process online orders received from area teachers. Volunteers young and old helped tape boxes, addressed packing slips, and placed colored crayons and pencils, rulers, markers, glue sticks, construction paper, notebooks, scissors--all sorts of school supplies, you name it--in boxes for each teacher.
Officially, called a “packing party,” BGS-SF and TrueGift volunteers socialized while they worked. Volunteers talked about their own experiences with schools, how budgets are tight and how teachers often supplement classroom needs out of their own pockets. Volunteers’ children talked about how much they liked their schools and energetically demonstrated that young people are eager to help and learn something new. Throughout the evening, people came and went and new acquaintances were made.
By the end of the evening, 20 teachers’ orders had been filled, with supplies valued at approximately $3,750.00. Deliveries were set for the following week. “It’s really rewarding to know that shortly after placing these useful supplies in boxes that they’ll be in the hands of students and teachers,” said Anne Whiteside, one volunteer from BGS-SF. One Board member of TrueGift, Hugh Merriam, said that the teachers really do appreciate the service they provide, “We receive letters as well as emails from teachers, and they are all very thankful.” The conclusion? A few extra supplies make a difference.
About TrueGift, Inc.
TrueGift (truegift.com) is a small nonprofit that organizes contributions of school supplies to individual classrooms. They provide a connection between the individual teacher's school supply needs and parents or others who wish to donate. The non-profit also purchases and ships school supplies with monies donated to them. TrueGift provides a place to list teacher requests on their website. Donors often provide funds so that they may make restricted or unrestricted school supply donations, but demand always outstrips supply. Located in California, TrueGift supports all U.S. schools for which contributions are tax deductible: public schools, nonprofit charter schools, non-profit secular private schools, and nonprofit religious schools.
