Qualtrics Survey Software asked Americans from all 50 states how their perception of safety and their behavior has or has not changed since 9/11. The survey results indicate that most Americans feel about the same as they did six years ago.

“A lot has changed — in terms of airport security and feelings about terrorism — since the World Trade Center attacks,” says Ryan Smith, Qualtrics Director. “We wanted to find out how those changes have affected American’s behavior, if at all.”

Only nine percent of respondents report flying less after 9/11 — and 22 percent of those who fly less or not at all claim “threat of terrorism” as a major factor for their airport avoidance. Likewise, 26 percent suggest the hassle from increased airport security measures keeps them from lifting off.

Qualtrics Survey Software quantified the average respondent’s opinion of airport security to find that most Americans find the stringent safety measures “inconvenient” but “necessary.” When asked how they felt about the statement, “the war on terrorism is worth fighting,” 61 percent agreed, and 23 percent held a neutral stance on the subject.

“We’re trying to find answers to questions the public cares about,” Smith says about the recent Qualtrics survey. “I think the results of this survey show that many are shaken by terrorism, but when it comes to our behavior, we don’t change very easily. No one ever said Americans weren’t stubborn.”
