London, United Kingdom, 2007/08/13 - New research from Frost & Sullivan, European Sludge Dewatering Equipment Market, finds that the market earned revenues of $666.4 million in 2006 and is estimated to reach $1,022.5 million in 2013.
Several challenges related to sludge treatment and disposal persist across Europe. At the same time, efforts are ongoing to harmonise sludge treatment facilities in emerging markets with EU standards. Consequently, refurbishment of outdated equipment in the more mature markets together with new installations in emerging markets is occurring on a significant scale. These trends ensure that the European sludge dewatering equipment market will display high growth over the medium term.
New research from Frost & Sullivan (environmental.frost.com), European Sludge Dewatering Equipment Market, finds that the market earned revenues of $666.4 million in 2006 and is estimated to reach $1,022.5 million in 2013.
“Increasing sludge production across Europe and the need for emerging markets in Southern and Eastern Europe to harmonise with EU standards for sludge disposal are major drivers in market growth,” notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Jaishree Srinivasan. ”The more mature markets in Western Europe are showing a marked preference for advanced dewatering solutions that address specific concerns such as high performance, cost-efficiency and structural modularity among others.”
EU sludge disposal legislations have resulted in a phase-out of land-filling as a viable option, with direct discharge being prohibited. EU and accession countries are faced with land-spreading and incineration as the only two available options. Both these options require treatment of sewage sludge and dewatering to achieve high, dry solids content before disposal.
Implementation of this legislation is now accelerating, and most countries are updating existing installations and/or building new facilities. This is providing sizeable opportunities for revenue growth in the European dewatering equipment market. However, budgetary constraints are acting as a dampener to investments in the dewatering sector. A significant part of the demand for dewatering equipment derives from the municipal sector. Large-scale investments for facilitating dewatering installations, especially in emerging markets, is subject to an influx of EU funds, that is expected to cease this year.
“A lack of consensus among EU member countries on funding allocations will result in a cessation of further financial support provided to municipalities in emerging markets,” explains Ms. Srinivasan. “This will set back large investments in sludge dewatering even as a lack of transparency in administrative processes and contractual legislation will hinder market expansion in certain southern and eastern European countries.”
Partnerships with local municipal wastewater treatment plants as well as with locally based market participants is an important strategic step that large multinational manufacturers and contractors can take to circumvent market barriers in emerging markets. Besides, significant growth opportunities remain untapped in the medium to small population- equivalent municipal and industrial end-user sectors.
