Escalating investments in pollution abatement, emission control, waste management and water treatment, as well as low labor costs and an economy with great potential, have made Chile the next big investment hub for the EBT industry.

New Country Industry Forecasts from the Frost & Sullivan Economic Research and Analytics (ERA) team reveal significant growth opportunities for the Chilean environmental industry in environmental consulting services, environmental impact assessment (EIAs), waste management techniques for hazardous waste, sewage processing and waste treatment technologies. For the building technologies industry, prospects are bright in fire detection and suppression sub segment, energy-efficient lighting and air conditioning for supermarkets.

We will send you the overview by email upon receipt of the above information.

“The Bachelet administration has taken many proactive steps toward environmental sustainability and energy efficiency, which have been beneficial to the EBT industry,” says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Archana Amarnath. “The creation of a Ministry of Environment is anticipated to help enforce stricter emission standards and pollution control measures, while the building technologies industry is expected to adopt stringent standards for energy-saving equipment in 2009.”

Energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) have been a major success, particularly in office buildings, households and streets. The air-conditioning sub-segment will register robust growth rates due to the rising consumer demand.

Liberalization of unilateral trade, favorable foreign direct investment (FDI) conditions, privatization of water utilities, free trade agreements (FTAs) and political and policy support have enhanced opportunities for foreign participants. They are collaborating with domestic companies through joint ventures, licenses, or opening subsidiaries, attracting the latter by their environmental and technical expertise.

The Chilean EBT industry imports environmental technology from the United States, Europe and Japan to comply with international environmental standards and improve the quality of its environmental equipment and services, lighting equipment and HVAC equipment. Chile then exports these sophisticated devices to other Latin American countries.

“Large export-oriented firms and multinational corporations are the main buyers of environmental goods and services,” notes Amarnath. “Privatized state enterprises, which have to be compliant to the government regulation on air pollution control, are also prospective consumers of environmental goods and services.”

There have been immense infrastructural developments in the EBT industry, with municipalities and other government bodies aiding turnkey projects and integrating with private companies. The construction boom in 2003 saw the development of new highways, airports and modern buildings. The political establishment is primarily focusing on the timely completion of ongoing environmental projects.
