Reducing the costs of electricity generated by concentrated solar power to make it competitive with energy provided by fossil fuels is high on the industry’s agenda. So what are the major roadblocks to CSP cost reduction?

“I believe the two major roadblocks are the lack of commercial experience and low economies of scale”- says José Luís García, Greenpeace energy campaigner, and continues, “those will be overcome, as the technology is just at the very beginning of its learning curve”

Alfonso Targhetta and Miguel Domingo, from the Consortium Cobra-SENER believe that cost reduction will be achieved by scaling up projects, using thermal storage, and increasing efficiency of receivers and mirrors. “Governments have the obligation to support these projects as they are a cornerstone to overcome the difference between the real cost of a plant and the "feasible" cost. It needs to be shortened step by step” Mr Targhetta adds.

José Luís García, Alfonso Targhetta and Miguel Domingo will be speaking at the Concentrated Solar Power Summit, on November 5-6. They will join a line-up of leading experts to discuss how to reduce CSP costs and drive commercialisation.

In the midst of this optimism and major expansion – and with the major players jostling for leadership positions – there are still major hurdles that CSP must overcome. Top of everyone's agenda is reducing the cost of CSP to deliver true competitiveness with oil, gas, coal and the influx of renewable. Making this the ideal moment for The Concentrated Solar Power Summit
