Until recently, an important problem for software modeling adoption has been its place outside the core development process. Development teams often use modeling to provide a sketch or blueprint, something that is outdated almost immediately once developers start coding. Model-based code generation puts modeling at the core of development and raises its importance above coding.

A recent study of MDD awareness and adoption indicates a high level of familiarity with the subject among software professionals in Europe. The research conducted by European research and marketing agency, MediaDev, revealed a considerably favorable opinion of MDD with those already employing such methods reporting a 92 percent satisfaction rate. DSL Tools from Microsoft, MetaEdit+ from MetaCase, and EMF from Eclipse were among the most recognized MDD tools and vendors.

The study also showed a high degree of familiarity with various MDD approaches. Generic modeling method MDA (based on UML) remains the most recognized (74 percent), but competition is increasing with Domain-Specific Modeling (e.g. Microsoft and MetaCase) and its various forms attaining a recognition rate between 48 and 66 percent.

Most significantly, the study found that 39 percent of polled professions reported either already using some form of model-based code generation or planning to do so in the near future.
