Whalley Guide and Scout Group from Clitheroe and Liverpool based 12th Fairfield Scout Troup will see Lancashire and Merseyside go head to head at this year’s Southport Flower Show as the chosen teams for David Bellamy’s Budding Gardeners competition.
Two teams of five will compete against each other to design the best garden and both groups will be given the same set of tools, plants and flowers with which to work. David Bellamy, who is a patron of Southport Flower Show, will be on hand on Sunday 19th August at 10am to offer advice to the children and he will announce the winning team and present them with £50 worth of vouchers later that day. The runners-up will each get a signed certificate from David.
Lisa Taylor, marketing executive for Southport Flower Show said: “Bellamy’s Budding Gardener’s competition is one of the most popular events at the Show and it re-enforces our ethos to make gardening fun for children. This competition encourages creativity whilst learning about nature and it also gives the scouts and guides the opportunity to discuss their ideas with botanist and conservationist David Bellamy.”
This year sees a concerted effort by Southport Flower Show to actively encourage children to take an interest in horticulture with the launch of Kids Kr8, a dedicated marquee for youngsters, which will include lots of fun activities and competitions including the opportunity to plant flowers, paint pots, create artwork based around nature and to design a garden in a shoebox.
This year’s Southport Flower Show will have a central theme of music and runs from 16th until 19th August 2007. The four day event will be officially opened by television and radio presenter Gloria Hunniford. For tickets please telephone 0870 44 44 226.
