So which is better, a large volume of traffic or a few dozen, unique visitors per day? The answer to that question really depends on the content of the site.
To get any significant visitors at all from the search engines requires that your site come up in the top of the search results and unless you have keywords that are frequently searched for, the amount of visitors you’ll receive is limited.
Even if your site is listed first in the search engines the volume of traffic you’ll receive is directly related to the content of your site.
Since we manage several web sites, we’ll compare the search traffic for two of them. The first is “Laundry Bag Store Online” and the second “A2Z Posters, Prints, Wall Art, T-Shirts and Tickets”. Notice the keywords in the web site names?
Most people searching for “laundry bags” use just that phrase, laundry bags. According to the data supplied by one popular search engine, the average monthly searches are approximately 2500 per month. There is no getting around that. The good news is there are not that many sites to compete with. At the time of this article, approximately 4 million results get returned when searching with Yahoo and a little over 3 million results get returned when searching with Google.
Seems like there is a lot of web sites selling laundry bags. Now let’s consider the A2Z Posters, Prints Site. The average number of searches for “posters” is approximately 42,000 per month. However, there are over 200 million results returned by Yahoo and 127 million returned by Google, approximately. Now that’s competition. So you can see that whatever the content of your site additional methods are required to obtain a steady flow of traffic.
Advertising is one way; link building is another way of generating visitors. This usually requires swapping links with another site. However, if the site you exchange links with buries your link then you’ve just wasted your time and space on your site. If a webmaster is serious about promoting their site they will use several methods and not just rely on search engine results.
Over the past several years we’ve tried many ways to increase traffic. Some were great are getting us unique visitors and some were not.
