Researchers at American Diabetes Association 67th Scientific Sessions (ADA) has claimed that the use of an insulin pen device could considerably reduce the incidences of hypoglycaemia.

Won Chan Lee, director of health economics at Abt Associates Inc., along with his fellow researchers, evaluated the influence of changeover to biphasic insulin aspart 70/30-pen device from conventional insulin preparation administer with vial or syringe on medicine adherence, healthcare resource use, as well as related costs.

The researchers have found that weak adherence to treatment for diabetes is highly correlated with enhanced risk for hospitalization and related expenses, with claims-related hypoglycaemia rates notably high for patients who are on conventional insulin.

The study was conducted on 486 patients who were diagnosed with type2 diabetes and had been treated earlier with human or else analogue insulin administer by vial or syringe.

Adherence was considerably improved after the changeover. The Medication Possession Ratio (MPR) improved from 59% - 68%, and was related with a considerable decrease in the probability of hypoglycaemia. Hypoglycaemic rates declined by almost two-third in patients with optimal adherence, termed as MPR of minimum 80%.

A recent report by RNCOS, “Insulin Delivery Systems Market Analysis (2007-2010)”, also supports the above findings as it highlights that switching to an insulin pen leads to improved medication adherence, fewer claims for hypoglycemic events, and reduced emergency department and physician visits.

The report also stated that pen devices, which combine the insulin cartridge and syringe in a single unit, improves dosing accuracy, increase mealtime flexibility and convenience of insulin delivery, with resultant positive effects on patient preference and treatment.

The report forecasted that owing to the high cost of oral insulin delivery devices, it is likely that the pen devices would dominate the insulin delivery market for quite a while.

The report also addresses some other interesting issues and facts that are critical for the success in the insulin delivery systems market such as discussion about the modes of insulin delivery, a detailed analysis of the major insulin delivery devices, scope of the major insulin delivery systems all over the world, analysis of various challenges and opportunities for the industry as well as profile discussion of key players in the sector.
