The stabilizing U.S. economy encourages industries to recover and pursue growth strategies aggressively. Due to the economic revitalization in the North American pneumatic industry, the pneumatic air prep and accessories market appears poised for growth for the next several years.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (powertransmission.frost.com), North American Pneumatic Air Prep and Accessories Market reveals that the market earned revenues of $1.21 billion in 2006 and estimates this to reach $1.61 billion in 2013.

The accessories market depends on the integration capabilities of manufacturers. In many cases, manufacturers have to incorporate sensors and multiple valves into single units, as well as actuators with valves and hoses for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

“The standard practice of coupling filters, regulators, and lubricators (FRLs) into a single unit has recently changed due to the omission of a lubricator in many 'piggy-backed' units,” notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Sashankh Kale. “The ability to meet stringent specifications of certain OEMs is critical, especially to manufacturers of medical and analytical instruments.”

While many manufacturers require more specialized components, the medical industry has the advantage of not requiring changes to the initial design until OEMs need product specifications for a new product. Given that the lengthy and mandatory approval process for medical equipment requires substantial time and resources, the medical industry avoids pursuing product changes that necessitate the repetition of the approval process.

Spurred by the development and dissemination of home healthcare devices, the medical end-user segment offers great potential for growth. The increase in the manufacture of medical devices has augmented the market size of minipneumatic components used in medical devices.

However, increased competition has created a more price-sensitive scenario in the pneumatic components market. Additionally, the market continues its transition to less expensive non-repairable units. While the number of FRL units sold has increased, the increase has not resulted in a surge in revenues.

Companies considering pricing their units lower to stay cost-competitive must realize that as raw material and production costs increase, the financial burden on the enterprise will also rise.

Depending on their tier level, as pneumatic companies face tighter margins, they will likely concentrate more on reducing their production and operational expenditures.

Some pneumatic air prep and accessories manufacturers opt for global outsourcing to control their manufacturing costs to realize greater revenues and profit margins. In particular, companies that have a wider line of product offerings prefer this outsourcing approach.

“Reducing production and operational costs can eventually help end-user companies in realizing better efficiencies,” states Kale. “End-user companies have shown a good amount of interest in the concepts of miniaturization and are seeking smaller products, which are high on the efficiency scale as well.”

The North American Pneumatic Air Prep and Accessories Market is part of the Power Transmission Growth Partnership Service Program, which includes research services in the following markets: North American hydraulic pumps, North American seals, gaskets and packing, and North American hydraulic valves and actuators.
