Why do the details of mergers, still in the negotiation phase, end up on newspaper front pages? How do competitors catch wind of critical new product launches months before their actual launch dates? As company leaders must deal with difficult realities, why do rumors of facility closures and layoffs circulate through communities liked wildfire, unnecessarily worrying workers who, in the end, are not affected? And how does sensitive salary data wind up on the desks of other employees who don’t have a legitimate “need to know,” distracting the workforce and creating animosity among co-workers?

These situations most often occur because of information leaks caused by a company’s insiders -- its own employees! Some employees in almost all organizations have access to information that they don’t need to know. And on many occasions these employees end up transmitting this information to others, either intentionally or through non-malicious error. This is supported by a recent study by the Ponemon Institute which concludes that the most likely threat to a company’s information security is corporate insiders. The Institute’s survey on data security breaches reveals that 69% of companies reporting serious data leaks attributed them to employees, compared to only 16% of leaks attributed to hackers, outside spies, and other external attackers.

Executive Privilege is a new service from an energetic start-up company of the same name. The service is designed to allow members of senior level teams and other highly confidential work groups to communicate and collaborate with one another without fear that their confidential discussions will be released to competitors, the press, or the public before it ought to be. The service is hosted on Executive Privilege’s own secure and encrypted off-site servers taking this information out of the hands of your organization’s internal IT employees.

Executive Privilege is a new company, but it was created by seasoned leaders from the technology, business, and legal industries. Moez Chaabouni is a founder and CEO of Executive Privilege. Chaabouni discusses one reason that there is a critical need for this new service: “It’s interesting how most companies would spend hundreds of thousands – if not millions – of dollars hardening their IT infrastructure and security to prevent an outside attack, yet totally ignore the most important risk -- the insider.”

Leaders in organizations that routinely transmit confidential information agree that the need for new security tools is tremendous. Consider the comments of Kim Barber, Operations Manager at Plannet Group: “One compromised email can ruin a career or even a company. It’s in the headlines everyday.” What should companies do about this? Barber says: “Hands-down, outsourcing executive communication and collaboration to a secure partner is the safest way to go.”

Chaabouni believes that diverse types of organizations will find that Executive Privilege addresses important information security needs for them. In addition to teams of corporate officers and board members in large public companies, he sees middle-management employee groups who are inventing and preparing to launch highly secretive new products as another likely set of users. And even not-for-profit boards have a big need for this. Board members commonly are full-time executives at other organizations. To conduct board-related business, they must use their home or business email accounts which are outside the not-for-profits’ IT boundaries. Offering these volunteers a separate software tool to handle all of their board communications both helps the board member stay organized and is conducive to better security and maintaining workflow audit trails for the organization itself.

Executive Privilege (e-privilege.com) is located in Columbus, Ohio. It is overseen by a Board of Advisors, which includes experienced senior leaders from other organizations in the business community.
