In an effort to encourage hospitals to maintain a state of continuous compliance, the Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) last year announced a new policy of conducting unannounced surveys. The policy encourages institutions to strengthen and maintain their EC programs in a constant state of readiness. To comply, facilities are finding that a higher level of coordination is needed among all EC departments to ensure that all the necessary data collection and reporting deadlines are met.
