The United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) has presented its 2007 Distance Learning Award to Giunti Labs, at USDLA’s 20th Anniversary Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. Annually, the USDLA Awards programme honours outstanding individuals and organisations for excellence in the field distance learning, education and training.

Giunti Labs received its award in the ‘business/corporation’ section of the ‘21st Century Best Practice’ category.

"As we celebrate our 20th Anniversary as a premier organisation for the entire distance learning profession, we are honoring Giunti Labs as a leader in the industry," said Dr. John G. Flores, CEO of USDLA. "Giunti Labs has raised the bar of excellence and we are truly honoured by Giunti Labs’ contributions to the distance learning industry.

"Distance learning is transforming the American educational landscape, through online technology, videoconferencing systems, satellite delivery and other media," said Flores.

Don Lake, USDLA board member and chair of the awards committee, noted that, “We look forward to seeing how Giunti Labs will inspire the 2008 award entries.”

The USDLA Award is the second major award that Giunti Labs has received in the last two months. It also won a ‘silver’ award in the first global competition of high impact use of technology in learning: the Learning Impact Awards (LIAs), which were announced at the Learning Impact conference in Vancouver, Canada, at the end of April.

The LIAs are unique in that they recognise the use of technology in context. Nominations include not only information about the technology but also how it is used by an educational or training organisation.

The event was organised by The IMS Global Learning Consortium (IMS GLC) and brought together 25 finalists, derived from nominations submitted from around the world.

Finalists were selected based on several evaluation factors including impact on learner achievement, impact on faculty adoption, financial return, impact on access, impact on accountability, and use of interoperability standards. Nominations with superior measurable impact on faculty/teacher adoption, student achievement, and ease of implementation earned the finalist slots.

The judges - six expert reviewers and combined voting from attendees at the Learning Impact conference, which served as a seventh reviewer – aimed to identify the highest levels of innovation, adoption and learning impact in the use of technology to support or enhance learning.

Accepting the silver award on behalf of Giunti Labs, its CEO, Fabrizio Cardinali, commented: “The IMS Learning Impact Awards emphasise the final results of the learning programme. The focus is not just on the technology.

“Rather than the technology, the challenge today is innovation in learning along with the ability to best reshape the learning processes and pedagogical approaches to achieve the best results. Technology itself is now naturally embedded in all modern learning solutions.”
