“The higher education segment has traditionally been an early adopter of technology due to the high level of exposure to technological developments in the market,” says Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst Roopa Shree. “The obvious cost savings offered by the magnitude of telephony users in this segment as well as the ease of configuring the system are a few reasons that are expected to drive the adoption of open-source telephony in the higher education segment.”
The decreasing costs of implementation and rising performance levels of wireless technology have driven the adoption of wireless local area networks (WLANs). Further, security solutions needed to tackle the vulnerability issues of next-generation networks will attract considerable spending in the vertical. Frost & Sullivan expects that the recent shootings at Virginia Tech will push the educational institutions to have some kind of emergency notification system in place.
However, the education vertical customers have found it difficult to justify the high investment in UM and UC applications due to numerous reasons. The most basic among them is the lack of the need for such a solution. Most education vertical staff/administrators, both at the K-12 as well as higher education level, hardly travel outside their campus and do not need such capabilities. The need for immediate access to voice mail or e-mail is not as critical in this vertical due to the limited urgency in responding to such messages.
"To appeal to this segment, the solution requires the integration of e-mail and fax technology with voice mail systems and in most instances, these customers are not willing to invest in new equipment until they have recovered their initial investment," explains Shree. "However, as the penetration of converged networks increases, UM and UC have a better chance of making inroads into this vertical."
