Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, 2005/10/20 - The British Learning Association's (BLA's) revised and improved Quality Mark is a unique quality improvement scheme that differs from other quality standards and initiatives that have been developed across the sectors of the learning industry.
It is different because it has both a rigorous approach, based on the EFQM Excellence Model, and a focus on areas specific to quality in learning & development that other systems do not have.
Organisations going through the Quality Mark process have access to good practice indicators designed to enhance the development, supply and use of learning products and services.
BLA General Manager, Brian Merison, said: "Most systems of quality assurance focus on generic aspects of achieving quality at organisational and system level. Their non specific nature supports consistency of approach in a broad range of activities but cannot support benchmarking in specific areas of performance and application. This is why the BLA Quality Mark is unique".
Lance Spraggons, Chair of the Quality Forum commented: “People development is such an important task for every organisation and for the UK economy as a whole. We need methods to drive quality standards and to support those involved in the learning lifecycle. The BLA Quality Mark does that and provides a framework for continuous quality improvement." He went on to say, "The revised and improved Quality Mark builds on the strengths and valuable aspects of its predecessor and introduces new categories of the award, appealing to a wider range of organisations".
The Quality Mark is targeted at both suppliers and users of learning and aims to drive the quality of learning provision and the impact that it has on organisational performance.

About the British Learning Association (BLA)
The BLA is a centre of expertise that produces best practice examples, identifies trends and disseminates information on both innovative and well-established techniques and technologies for learning. The aim is to synthesise existing knowledge, develop original solutions and disseminate this to a wide cross sector membership.
About the BLA Quality Mark
It is widely recognised that the development of an organisation’s people provides a powerful competitive weapon. At the same time customer expectations and demands for better quality are growing. The BLA’s Quality Mark is designed specifically for the learning sector and provides a means for organisations to align their learning activities with customer and organisational demands.
The strength of the system is a framework adapted from the EFQM-Excellence Model. This provides a robust, objective and internationally recognised model of excellence which provides the Quality Mark with a recognised platform based on outcomes at each stage of the process.
High level benefits include:
• External recognition of commitment to quality through a prestigious award.
• Detailed feedback from experts in the field on your current status highlighting future development opportunities.
• Confidence and reassurance to learners and customers.
• Competitiveness in the commercial market place.
• Higher visability of your contribution to the organisation.
• Impact on the bottom line.
• A range of networking opportunities.
The Quality Mark has been redeveloped to further streamline its operation and to update the award categories and indicators of good practice to reflect the changes that have taken place in the market since 1998, not least the rapid evolution of e-learning. It is supported by an established infrastructure. The Quality Forum is responsible for directing all aspects of the process, for endorsing the recommendations of the verifiers and for managing the development of the Quality Mark.
The Quality Mark has been successfully applied for and achieved by a number of the BLA’s membership representing a wide range of sectors, including: FE, HE, adult community learning, local government, MOD, corporate and learning services supply.
