Commas, semicolons, and other pertinent punctuation marks will cross the border into Canada on Saturday, May 5, when National Punctuation Day founder Jeff Rubin is a guest on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's popular weekend national-language program, "And Sometimes Y."
The 30-minute program on May 5 will be devoted to punctuation. It will air from 11:30 am to noon in every time zone in the United States and Canada on CBC Radio One. Internet listeners may go to CBC website at 11:30 in their time zone and select a location from the list to hear the broadcast.
Rubin, of Pinole, CA, is also the founder of Punctuation Playtime, a school-assembly program featuring a variety of interactive learning games and activities that make learning punctuation fun for children in grades 1-6. Punctuation Playtime is also available as a training DVD for teachers.
"Punctuation is a key component in the development of good writing skills," says Rubin. "Successful people have good communication skills, and knowing how to write properly is one of them. People must know how to write properly if they are serious about success."
Jeff Rubin, AKA "Punctuation Man," (punctuationplaytime.com) is a veteran newspaperman and newsletter publisher for corporate clients. He is the founder of National Punctuation Day (September 24) and developed Punctuation Playtime.
Punctuation Playtime® founders Jeff Rubin and Norma Martínez-Rubin believe that reaching children at the beginning of their scholastic careers is critical in helping them develop the reading and written communication skills that will be a key not only to their academic success, but to their professional success as adults.
Punctuation Playtime®, a 45-minute program for children in grades 1-6, takes a subject that children might roll their eyes at and makes it an engaging and enjoyable learning experience.
Jeff and Norma involve the children in a participatory, theater-like experience. The program encourages teamwork and involvement while teaching proper punctuation. They do this with fun activities such as:
• The Punctuation Relay
• The Wynken, Blynken, and Nod Poetry Punctuation Contest
• The Punctuation Rap, performed by facilitators AND students, and
• Pin the Punctuation Mark on the Sentence
— all designed to reinforce important punctuation lessons.
Jeff, founder of National Punctuation Day®, and his wife, Norma, are passionate about providing children with tools that will enhance their literacy.
They provide fun, educational take-home activities that the children can do with their family and friends. For example, each student receives an activity book featuring punctuation mark examples and definitions; punctuation mazes, puzzles, contests, and matching games; and colorful punctuation quizzes.
Teachers receive teaching tools and classroom aids, including a dozen punctuation-related activities to use throughout the year, and a set of four, 4-color punctuation posters for the classroom.
