Marion, NC, United States, 04/30/2007 - In a press release today SoundExchange offers stats and their opinions on the recently proposed Internet Radio Equality Act but things don't add up. I beg to differ with the math presented.

In an effort to tear down the facts SoundExchange released a press release claiming that the SavenetRadio Coalition was merely a front for the larger broadcasters. I beg to differ on that opinion. As the owner and operator of WebcastersUnite.net which represents some 360 small webcasters and is a member of this coalition I refute your claim. SoundExchange, and Mr.John Simson, had no problem with the idea of shutting down over 10,000 small internet radio stations. You made no proposal to compensate the needs of these stations. You blatantly stated perhaps there were too many of us. Now you want to cry foul because you have realized there really are that many of us and we have listeners, loyal listeners. Those listeners would prefer that we remain online and accessable.
The SaveNetRadio Coalition represents our interests, our listeners interests, and thousands of artists interests. Let's get real. The statistics you are throwing around are derived mostly from the top 40 artists royalty payments. Most independent artists see nothing from SoundExchange. How about some stats on how many registered artists you have verses how many actually received payments from SoundExchange last year? Then tell us how much money in supposed "Unclaimed Royalties" SoundExchange confiscated from 2006.
Past that, how is it that a few days ago the windfall was $50,000,000.00 and now it's $10,000,000.00? I suppose in a few days it will go to $100,000,000.00? Does SoundExchange just make those figures up as it goes and cite this study or that study? Lets deflate this a little. John Draper states "A small webcaster with 500 listeners tuned in on average and collecting $2000 a month in donations to survive would see their SoundExchange fees go from $240 a month to $6,500 a month. That's not a modest increase, that's financially devastating." And it's not a false statistic. Seems to me a lot of hype fom SoundExchange is getting published." Again I say "BUNK!" Avid internet radio listeners do not listen 40 hours a month, they listen everyday all day, 7 days a week, 8-16 hours a day.
My take is simple. More bs. I would usually say more but sheesh, SoundExchange is saying enough to sink their own boat. Folks weren't born yesterday. This may be a corporate battle, but it involves the small webcasters. Combined we make one more large entitiy to deal with. We chose to unite for a common goal. Remember the spiderman movie? "If you mess with one of us, you mess with all of us." You messed up SoundExchange!
