Berkeley, California-based renewable energy and green lifestyle company Green Options not only made its trade show debut at the Chicago Green Festival; it also made a difference for the event’s environmental impact. As a part of the company’s effort to show consumers the many options available for “greening the good life,” Green Options offered GreenFest attendees a unique opportunity: visitors to the company’s booth could calculate the carbon emissions produced from their travel to and from the event, which would then be offset by renewable energy credits provided by Renewable Choice Energy.
“Our mission is to show consumers that there are many green lifestyle options that don’t involve major sacrifices or costs,” said Green Options CEO David Anderson. “We’re partnering with Renewable Choice to offset the almost 74,000 pounds of CO2 emissions registered by our visitors in order to make them aware of that choice. We were happy to meet many people that biked or took public transportation to GreenFest; for those visitors and vendors that had to fly or drive, carbon offsets provide a means for insuring that other activities, such as the generation of electricity by wind power, will neutralize their emissions.”
While the Green Festival offset its own electricity use at Chicago’s McCormick Center, Anderson notes “Attendees’ travel was the single biggest source of carbon emissions for the event. We wanted to contribute to the organizers’ efforts to make GreenFest as sustainable as possible.”
