Orbital Data Net to Hurricane Proof Emergency Communications in Louisiana

NewswireToday - /newswire/ - Columbia, MO, United States, 04/22/2007 - To prepare for the inevitability of future hurricanes, Orbital Data Net (ODN) has developed secure high speed VSAT services that includes secure connections to Louisiana's data center, as well as circuits supporting the State’s P25 radio network.

Post Katrina - "Governor Blanco issued an executive order that established a State Interoperability Executive Committee (SIEC). The SIEC is charged with improving the interoperability of communications by first responders in Louisiana. One of the accomplishments of the SIEC was to acquire mobile radio trailers and towers with a satellite connection to either establish a new radio site or bring back up an existing site to communicate with other State first responders in other areas. This allows the State to rapidly establish radio communications in areas without coverage and/or expand the capacity in an area that has an influx of first responders " explained Colonel Henry Whitehorn of the State of Louisiana.

The Louisiana State Police and Orbital Data Net are the first in the country to merge both Public Safety Voice Communications and Data Satellite Link Technologies together for a Wide-Area trunked radio system connectivity solution, as well as for the Southern Louisiana coastal Troop Intranet Data and VOIP links from Baton Rouge, answering the needs and lessons learned from hurricanes Katrina and Rita, when terrestrial T-1 connections were disrupted.

Orbital Data Net provides customized radio satellite link trailers that can be deployed to any tower site to replace T-1 connectivity bringing these trunked sites back into wide area coverage. A tower trailer equipped with a 110' telescoping tower, an onboard satellite radio link, as well as an independent 700/ 800mhz repeater site can provide wide area trunked coverage where a tower has fallen or for fill in coverage.

“We obviously can’t prevent the destruction caused by hurricanes, but we can plan for the inevitable disruption of telecom services by installing satellite systems that are either pre-positioned or quickly deployed. They must also be easy to operate and repair by technicians on the scene and in difficult circumstances,” stated Greg Heifner, Orbital Data Net CEO.
