Jaekyung Lee, an associate professor for the Graduate School of Education at State University of New York at Buffalo, found that by 2014, less than 25% of black students will achieve National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) proficiency in reading, and less than 50% will achieve proficiency in math.

So why are homeschoolers so easily exceeding these low expectations? Dr. Brian Ray of the National Home Education Research Institute conducted a wide-ranging study entitled Strengths of Their Own: Home Schoolers across America. Part of this study focused on the differences in the scholastic performance of publicly-educated minorities and minority homeschoolers. Ray found that homeschooled minorities scored in the 87th percentile in reading, 37 points higher than the national average. In math, Ray found that homeschooled minority students are in the 77th percentile, 27 points higher than the national average. Homeschooling effectively does away with the wide gap between white and minority scores.

These statistics stand in shocking contrast to the performance levels of minorities in public school programs. Minority students have historically scored well below the national average. According to the Associated Press, the average minority test scores are so low that many school districts have actually opted to omit the scores of minorities from their annual reports so they can meet No Child Left Behind standards.
