The company has leveraged its understanding of customer requirements, which enabled it to emerge as the European market leader for CPE MSS services in 2006.
"BT has a strong European presence, operating directly in many European countries in addition to the United Kingdom," notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Mr. Jose Lopez. "This has allowed the company to expand its products and services beyond its core market, enabling it to promote its MSS offering in larger network services deals, where security is often an added component of the offering."
The company's comprehensive MSS offering includes firewall/VPN, IDS/IPS, anti-virus, anti-spam, URL filtering and strong authentication services (PKI). It has also obtained in-the-cloud service, as well as services acquired from Counterpane in vulnerability assessment and penetration testing. In addition, BT acts as a value-added re-seller for selected key vendors such as MessageLabs.
BT Global Services strengthened its position in this market with the acquisition of Infonet in February 2005 and the acquisition of Radianz in the following month. While the acquisition of Infonet enhanced the company's offerings in MSS, the acquisition of MSS specialist, Counterpane in November 2006 was a significant step forward.
One of the last pure-play players in the MSS market, Counterpane had a minor presence in the European market but had earned high recognition in the U.S. market. The acquisition added credibility to BT's MSS portfolio and opened up the US market for it. Initially, Counterpane is expected to function as a separate business within BT's Security Practice, which is part of BT's $18 billion Global Services division.
"With an extensive global presence providing local availability of business, technology, service, as well as support professionals in 70 countries, BT enables multi-site organisations to communicate and collaborate at any time, in any place, through a range of devices," states Mr. Lopez. "Moreover, the company's continued growth is based on a strong business model, which reflects its commitment toward global connectivity, quick transition to 21st century networks and services, as well as its emphasis on customer satisfaction."
