Frost & Sullivan presents Scent Detection Technologies Ltd. (SDT) with the 2006 Technology Innovation Award in the field of advanced explosive detection in Europe. This Award is presented in recognition of the company’s innovative explosive trace detection technology and its efforts in the research, as well as the strategic commercialisation of its novel portable Explosive Trace Detector (ETD).
Established in 2004, the company's focus has been to overcome the operational challenges faced by detection techniques such as Ion Mobility Spectroscopy (IMS) and Mass Spectrometry through the adoption of an innovative approach for explosive trace detection.
“SDT’s High-Frequency Quartz Crystal Microbalance (HF-QCM) technology - is a green technology that can sniff out trace levels of explosive chemicals at a lower cost in comparison to existing explosive trace detection technologies,” notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Mr. Hari Ramamoorthy. “The highlight of the technology is that it does not employ any radioactive sources, as is the case with IMS-based techniques, X-ray and other CT scanners.”
The technology is a combination of several scientific disciplines, which digitally recreate the mammalian olfactory processes. The patented High-Frequency Quartz Crystal Microbalance (HF-QCM) technology is used to detect a wide range of substances with great accuracy and speed.
SDT’s Mini-Nose™ 1000 Series consists of an array of sensors. The sensors and coatings employed provide high sensitivity and selectivity for trace detection and identification. For detection, the frequency responses from all the sensors are measured over predetermined time intervals. Identification is by means of proprietary pattern recognition algorithms that analyze the obtained data and matches it with a library of digital signatures of different explosive chemicals.
The trace detection technology can be used to screen clothing, baggage, ID cards, tickets, cargos and containers for any trace level of explosive chemicals. “The technology enables rapid analysis and quick results,” explains Mr. Ramamoorthy. “Accordingly, the system will find application in airports, seaports, railways, first responders, police, military, customs, border security, postal services and other places where the tracing of explosives is of crucial importance.”
The Mini-Nose™ 1000 Series is a two-piece hand-held ergonomically designed ETD that offers increased efficiency. The ETD is resistive to humidity and barometric pressures, being robust and adaptable to any working environment. The product can match the trace detection of its peer technologies, even up to low nanogram levels, is also highly cost-effective, and involves minimal maintenance.
“SDT plans to extend its innovative core technology for use in narcotics, chemical and biological detection, as well as for water security,” states Mr. Ramamoorthy. “Products for these applications are undergoing advanced stages of development and the company expects to launch them in 2008.”
Frost & Sullivan’s Technology Innovation Award is bestowed upon a company that has carried out new research, which has resulted in innovation(s) that have or are expected to bring significant contributions to the industry in terms of adoption, change, and competitive posture. This Award recognizes the quality and depth of a company’s research and development program as well as the vision and risk-taking that enabled it to undertake such an endeavour.
Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognise companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.
