Following its launch at WMIC 2015, Bruker’s new multimodal Albira Si PET/SPECT/CT system has generated considerable interest worldwide, and the company is pleased to announce the first installation at The Texas A&M Institute for Preclinical Studies (TIPS).

PET/SPECT/CT system Albira Si, installed at the Texas A&M Institute for Preclinical Studies

The addition of the Albira Si to their array of other instruments, including Bruker’s Xtreme™ optical and X-ray imaging system, supports the TIPS mission of being a leader in translational research and providing comprehensive preclinical research services.

Associate Professor at Texas A&M Gamal Akabani explained: “The paradigm of translational cancer research requires observational modalities that can provide a view of the spatio-temporal pathophysiology of cancer progression and its etiology. There is a significant need for complementary disease models that can elucidate the complex omics interactions and environmental factors that contribute to disease.”

Dr. Akabani continued: “The installation of the Bruker Albira Si, with its superior performance and excellent field of view and accuracy, will complement our translational research capabilities from rodent animal models into natural animal models of cancer. This will enhance the opportunity to understand and expedite the development of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for cancer and other diseases."

Dr. Wulf I. Jung, President of Bruker’s Preclinical Imaging Division, added: “Bruker shares TIPS’ vision of providing the best possible multi-modal information from animal models for preclinical research to advance discovery and treatment of human diseases. We are confident that the superior PET data from the Albira Si will further enhance TIPS’ capabilities and keep them at the leading edge in this field.”

Preclinical imaging and PET technology in particular (bruker.com/preclinicalimaging) is aiding researchers as they seek to translate their work in in vivo models to clinical research. However, up to now, sub-millimeter PET image spatial resolution across a wide field of view has not been feasible. With the introduction of the Albira Si, which uses continuous crystal technology with Silicon Photomultiplier readout, this restriction has been removed. In practice, homogenous sub-millimeter volumetric PET resolution is now delivered on all three axes across the entire field of view. Advanced depth-of-interaction detection enables precise 3D localization of events without the limitations of conventional crystals configured in discrete layers. The result is superior resolution and consistent quantification in an area up to 5 times larger than for conventional preclinical PET systems, providing unprecedented image clarity. By introducing this new technology in its proven multimodal Albira platform, Bruker now offers even better image co-registration.
