NHS Tayside has today signed a contract with InterSystems that will significantly improve the quality of care provided by its hospitals. InterSystems TrakCare®, a unified health information system, will support clinical decision-making and lead to further improvements in patient safety, efficiency and patient care. NHS Tayside is the 11th Board to sign up to the Scottish Patient Management System contract with InterSystems. With the addition of NHS Tayside, the population of Scotland being served under the contract will rise to 91%.
NHS Tayside covers 22 acute and community hospitals across Angus, Dundee, and Perth & Kinross, including the University of Dundee’s Medical School attached to, Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, and serves a population of over 400,000.
TrakCare will transform the way hospital staff work and significantly improve patient care. The digitisation of patient medical records will support clinical decisions, improve staff and patient communications, and lead to better processes for prescribing drugs. Ensuring services are safer and more efficient will support the objectives and benefits sought within the eHealth Strategy for Scotland.
InterSystems will work closely with NHS Tayside to ensure TrakCare is implemented around the needs of the clinical teams. The programme will implement the first two phases over the next two years and will become an integral way of working for all staff.
TrakCare will provide functionality to support clinicians in caring for patients, monitoring patients, sharing information with colleagues, and informing decisions about treatments, medicines and care. Consultants, doctors, nurses, therapists, allied health professionals, and other care staff will have immediate and secure access to patient information so they can make swifter, more accurate decisions while involving the patient. This initial phase will cover the implementation of TrakCare patient administration, maternity, and emergency department, replacing existing patient administration and referral management systems.
Mark Palmer, Country Manager, InterSystems UK, said: “We are delighted NHS Tayside has chosen InterSystems as its health informatics partner. TrakCare will provide the Board with a modern, sustainable electronic patient record platform for the delivery of high-quality patient care.
“We look forward to working closely with the Board to realise the benefits of joined-up care for its patients and staff. This will be the foundation for better, safer care that will continue to evolve to meet their needs,” he added.
NHS Tayside Director of eHealth Jenny Bodie said,“As part of our five-year eHealth strategy, NHS Tayside is fully committed to the continual development of our eHealth systems to help us to deliver person-centred, safe and clinically effective care for all of our patients, all of the time.”
Tayside Health Board is responsible for the provision of health care services for the residents of Angus, Dundee and Perth & Kinross. The geographical boundaries cover three local council areas serving over 400,000 of a population.
