A consortium of Doosan Engine Co., Ltd and Global Trading Group (GTG) has signed a contract to supply Gambia with a single MAN B&W 7K60MC-S low-speed engine that will run on liquid fuel.

The engine will play a key part in the expansion of the Kotu power station, located in the national capital, Banjul, which already features an MAN B&W 8L42MC-S low-speed engine installed in 1989. It is being produced for the National Water and Electricity Company Limited (NAWEC).

The state-owned NAWEC has chosen the latest version of the K60MC-S engine type, and the unit will provide a mechanical output of 12.46 MW at 150 rpm. The engine will comply with the NOx emission limit of the World Bank’s regulation.

Based on statistical information, the distribution of electrical consumption in Gambia is 83% for residential areas, 11% public services and 6% for local authorities, industries, banks and agriculture in the Greater Banjul Area. When the new engine enters into operation, it will increase capacity at the Kotu power station by approximately 50%.

MAN Diesel & Turbo (mandieselturbo.com) has seen a rise in activity in Africa recently with this new order following on that announced in January 2015 to supply an Eritrean power plant with two MAN B&W 12K60MC-S low-speed engines.
