“As recent as 2-3 years ago, the best patients could expect after undergoing laser vision correction surgery was 20/20 vision, which by most measures is excellent vision. During the past couple of years, however, laser vision correction technology has developed to a point where the results that can be achieved are exceeding not only patient expectations, but that of the industry as well.
It is now not uncommon for patients to undergo LASIK surgery and get vision in the 20/15 or 20/10 range. This is primarily due to new technologies that enable surgeons to better evaluate the patient’s exact refractive error. A treatment plan can be designed with computers that perform billions of calculations in a matter of seconds, and lasers that can achieve levels of precision not previously attainable. Before, surgeons were limited in that their ability to measure a patient’s prescription had to occur through feedback from the patient. Now doctors have computerized equipment that can measure the eye without the patient saying a word. Because of this, we are seeing an increasing number of people getting laser vision correction surgery. In addition, a significant percentage of people who had the procedure several years ago are having it redone to achieve the results possible through the technological developments of the past couple of year.”
Dr. George Joseph, M.D., is a Board Certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist and has performed more than 40,000 LASIK surgeries, and over 10,000 cataract procedures.
