How to Monetize Your Friends List or Are your friends worth more than 5 cents? On March 13th Miriam Olsson of CNET blogged about members of MySpace who are attempting to monetize their MySpace friends by selling their friends list on eBay. What a great concept!
We, as industrious entrepreneurial Americans can always see the bottom line in everything. Its a red, white and blue trait that is what makes us as a nation stand out in the world. We, as a people, have tag sales where we sell our old accumulated belongings, garage and yard sales, where, after which we can actually park our cars in the garage again and get paid for it. We have flea markets and handicrafts fairs where we can sell our leather wallet that we made from a kit, or the string of cheap plastic beads we made at camp. All of these are personal achievements of which we have in our own minds justifiably monetized. Making money from personal achievements is a simple way to go, once you have identified the value of such achievements. To this end, some brilliant person has stood up and said that the item he or she can put the most monetary value on, the item that represents the greatest personal achievement in their life, is that stellar number of friends (who aren't really his friends or even acquaintances at all), on their buddy list. We all know the value of a good friend, but the personal value system is seriously wounded when the value of a friend becomes monetized.
In days gone by we had the Guinness World Book of Records, the trophy, plaque, and running first across a finish line as a goal. Well now in the 21st century, winning, the trill of victory, or even the pride that comes with a personal accomplishment, is not enough. Its the money, need I say it again, its the money. But to what value? This person puts a mere value of $2000 dollars on their friends list. At 100,000 friends that comes out to a personal self worth of $.05 cents per each friend. Observers speculate that the list is of value to marketing and advertising firms, who would acquire all the associated email and addresses. Will, that does beat the customer acquisition costs which for many companies is over $10 per customer. So it is a bargain.
But, I, yes I, ascertain, that this person undervalued his and his friends personal self worth. I, yes I, have determined that he could have used a superior value system and put more of a bounty on his friends head. And what will his friends get for being sold as a mere commodity, NOTHING but advertising. If your going to monetize friends, at least give them something of value in return. Here they get to be the first on a new social networking site. Because of this I propose a challenge. I will put more of a value on your friends and increase your possible revenue, and I make this challenge open for all. Send GrownUpsOnline.com your friends and we will pay you one dollar for each. So what sounds better for you, $.05 cents or one dollar? Your friends are at least worth a dollar, aren't they? And we WILL NOT advertise to them. So, how will this work?
GrownUpsOnline.com is the antithesis of your existing social network.
