Global Business Intelligence (BI) and analytics software vendor, Yellowfin, is set to host a worldwide series of Webinars, focused on BI Dashboard Best Practices, across Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th May 2015. The three Webinars will cater for each major time zone.
“Building best practice dashboards is one of the best ways to ensure the success of any Business Intelligence initiative,” said Yellowfin Director of Product Marketing, John Ryan. “However, while dashboards remain the most crucial and fundamental method for communicating data-based insights to decision-makers, research indicates that the majority of dashboards fail to deliver insights in the most effective way possible.”
Dashboards were rated as the most important BI technology for implementing business-driven BI and analytics in TDWI’s best practices report, Business-Driven Business Intelligence and Analytics (published Q3, 2014).

Ryan said that Yellowfin’s BI Dashboard Best Practices Webinar series would show participants how to:
• Design dashboards that provide instant insight, while avoiding superfluous visualizations;
• Create dashboards that are relevant to job function, appropriate for mode of consumption, relate to business strategy and prompt accurate, timely action;
• Select appropriate visualizations that best communicate the message that chosen KPIs are intended to convey;
• Deliver the right dashboards, to the right people, at the right time, to drive faster and better fact-based decision-making.
“While the BI industry has seen enormous advancements over the last decade, results indicate that dashboards could still be built and delivered much better,” said Ryan.
Ryan’s comments were echoed by data visualization expert, Stephen Few, in his Why Most Dashboards Fail piece. Few asserted that the majority of dashboards only communicate a small portion of the total insights required to properly monitor business operations. Similarly, Ventana Research’s Mark Smith, in his manifesto, The Pathetic State Of Dashboards, argued that most dashboards fail to deliver on their intended objectives and suffer from underwhelming user adoption rates.
David Loshin, president of BI and information management consultancy Knowledge Integrity Inc., in his opinion piece BI dashboards need measured approach on data visualizations, said that much of today’s poor dashboard designs were a product of too many visualization options, which resulted in the medium being put before the message.
Renowned data visualization expert, Edward Tufte, distilled the notion of purposeful visual communication in his PBS documentary, The Art of Data Visualization: “In the arrangement of visualization, every single pixel should testify directly to content.”
