Alstom and NG Metalúrgica, a leading Brazilian manufacturer of steam turbines and other equipment, have signed a cooperation agreement to jointly approach the Brazilian market for high performance small and mid-size steam turbines. Under the agreement, NG Metalúrgica will sell Alstom’s GRT[1]’s high speed reaction type steam turbines in Brazil. Alstom will share all necessary technology with its partner while contributing certain engineering services and components to the turbines sold by the Brazilian company.

“The extensive experience of both our companies will facilitate a quick market entry at a time where Brazil urgently needs to build up its biomass and industrial power generation capacity as a reliable source of electricity”, said Daniel Wahler, Alstom’s Vice President Industrial Steam Turbines.

Brazil is one of the world’s most dynamic markets for biomass thermal power generation, most of it being associated with the sugar and process industry. Combining NG Metalúrgica’s close relationship with Alstom’s GRT steam turbine family will offer the Brazilian steam turbine customers a new and highly competitive local option.

“Combining Alstom’s advanced reaction turbine technology with NG Metalúrgica’s long standing service track record, its local base, and its knowledge of the needs of sugar and process industries will create maximum value to customers that require efficient and dependable power to secure uninterrupted production during the sugar harvesting season or during extended runs of their process plants”, said Giovanni Gobbin, Chief Operating Officer of NG Metalúrgica

According to GlobalData[2], Brazil’s installed biomass power generation capacity will rise from 11.5 GW in 2013 to an estimated 17 GW by 2018, when Brazil becomes the world’s leading biomass power market. Argus Media[3] reports that more than 40 projects with a combined capacity of over 2000 MW were registered just for the upcoming April 27, 2015 biomass power auction. The new biomass capacity serves to offset both the reduced output of many hydro plants hampered by below-average precipitation in recent years and the intermittent generation of Brazil’s more than 7GW of wind power.
