The global distributed control systems (DCS) market is on its way to rapid growth as service opportunities from existing installations and greenfield expansion in developing regions picks up. Industrial development due to the shale gas revolution in North America and the need for energy security in Asia-Pacific and Latin America will further spur demand.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, Analysis of the Global Distributed Control Systems (DCS) Market, finds that the market earned revenues of $15.94 billion in 2013 and estimates this to reach $21.11 billion in 2020. The study covers the cement and glass, chemical and petrochemical, electric power generation, food and beverage, mining and metal, pulp and paper, water and wastewater, refining, oil and gas, and pharmaceutical and biotech end-user sectors.

“While revenues will primarily stem from energy industries such as the electric power and oil and gas sectors, technology advancements will increasingly enable DCS to scale down for smaller applications as well,” said Frost & Sullivan Industrial Automation and Process Control Senior Research Analyst Piyush Dewangan. “Emerging applications such as batch management and renewable power generation will provide excellent growth opportunities for DCS suppliers.”

However, this demand will be tempered by growing cyber security concerns. Recent cyber-attacks and the discovery of malwares like Dragonfly and Havex have raised fears of unscheduled downtimes, threats to the safety of plants and people, and information security risks. As a result, end users are cautious with investments in DCS, and short-term priorities are moving from capacity expansion projects to security projects.

As security standards are put in place, government intervention will increase to enforce compliance. As a result, added security features in DCS will become top priority among suppliers. Vendors with robust security features and services will have a greater chance to win projects, especially from critical infrastructure industries.

“Further, end users are looking for collaborative DCS that include higher-level solutions such as production management, asset management, and manufacturing execution systems,” added Dewangan. “Automation suppliers must also offer customized DCS bundled with tailored solutions for smaller applications to widen their reach in the global DCS market.”
