Symphony Teleca Corporation (STC), the global innovation and development services company, today offered its predictions for top technology trends and innovations that will make 2015 the year of IoT. With the worlds of software, cloud and mobile joining forces with advanced predictive analytics, 2015 will bring with it groundbreaking technologies that help consumers stay connected throughout every aspect of their lives.

"2014 was a strong year with a great deal of research and development work in the IoT space, and in 2015 we are going to see the fruits of that labor," said Sanjay Dhawan, President and CEO of Symphony Teleca. "This will be the year that those ideas come to life in actual products and solutions and consumers are going to start to realize a truly connected experience across every activity they participate in."

Five of the top technology trends that Symphony Teleca predicts for 2015, include:

Speed Limit Increases on the Road to the Connected Car
There will be 50 billion connected devices by 2020 and it is estimated that 60% of all vehicles will be connected and become a natural part of the Internet of Things (IoT). With this will come a shift in the automotive value chain with an increased focus on technology which will drive greater competition at the IVI platform level as well as shorter development timelines. The automotive market will start to mimic the mobile app environment in the early 2000s, where standards and flexible platforms will result in an ecosystem that delivers huge value to both automakers and drivers alike.

Furthermore, as hybrid and all electric cars start to grow in popularity, expect the connected car to expand its focus to become a data collection hub. Connected cars will sense and interact with the world around them, sharing real time data streams to a plethora of companies who will be able to use that information to enhance service offerings to all drivers.

All this data in 2015 will spark "in-car marketing". The car will become a retailer's channel to the customer. Marketers will have 45-60 minutes of the driver/passenger's time where they can influence customer behavior in a targeted way.

Retailers Open Wallets for IoT
IoT will continue to push retailers to evolve as their customers shop across channels. Part of that will be making sure that anything that is available online can be found in-store. Consumers must have the opportunity to shop via the "endless aisle," in which shelf space is extended to the brand's full catalog of products and accessible content.

IDC says that over the next 3 years, half of CIOs across the top 250 retailers will adopt omni-channel IT governance fit for a 3rd platform era to combat shadow-IT. The organization also says that CIOs will invest in omni-channel integration technologies as a top priority to support growth in the omni-channel shopper sales. Consumers will be on more screens and in more places. In 2015 the wall between online shopping and in-store experiences will be torn down.

Wearables Cut The Cord
2015 will be the year that wearables develop as an independent category as the focus moves to use case innovation and ecosystem development. Instead of being add-on technologies that enhance other devices, wearables will become a focal point in their own right and will move toward the center of their own ecosystem as opposed to being an adjunct of another device. The most successful wearable products will be those that can integrate the newest data analytics and mobile computing technologies through unobtrusive hardware to enable an experience beyond a typical smartphone.

Web and Broadcast Unite
Consumers continue to demand content wherever and whenever they want it and we'll see traditional TV merge seamlessly with online web content in 2015 to meet this demand. With this will come a new paradigm where broadcasters become more than just content providers and instead enable true interactive services. Broadcasters' websites will be able to unite a household’s social media presence with its broadcast viewing preferences and habits as well as act as a hub for multiplatform content delivery. With a compelling reason for viewers to share their profiles, broadcasters will leverage IoT integration with data analytics to determine who is watching what, from which device, at what time.

Health Becomes Mobile
According to the Global Mobile Health Market Report, compiled by research2guidance, more than a third of 1.4 billion smartphone users in 2015 will be running some kind of mobile healthcare application. Over the last few years there has been a tremendous growth in portable personal wellness devices and mobile fitness applications in particular have enjoyed a hugely successful 2014. This is opening the doors for healthcare providers to up their game when it comes to leveraging that data to provide better care and move towards predicative care services that can be delivered to individuals wherever they are.
