The project will connect three Cycladic islands Mykonos, Paros and Syros directly to mainland Lavrion, located in the southeastern coast of Attica, Greece.

The project aim is threefold: to sustainably meet energy demand on the Cycladic islands throughout high-demand summer seasons; to phase out dedicated fuel-powered generation plants on Cycladic islands in line with EU directives, such as reducing gas emissions; and finally, to lower the cost of energy in the Cycladic islands by connecting them to power plants on the mainland.

Alstom will supply three GIS substations (170 kV) to replace small existing power plants on the islands of Mykonos, Paros and Syros. These substations will be connected to a fourth substation, also to be supplied by Alstom, in Lavrion near Attica. The turnkey project includes design and manufacturing of Alstom equipment such as GIS, transformers, reactors, capacitors and Agile digital substation automation system. Equipment will be manufactured from Alstom units in Switzerland, France, Finland and Turkey.

Armand Pineda, Vice President West Europe and Africa of Alstom, said,“Alstom is proud to contribute to this major strategic development, connecting Cycladic islands to mainland Greece as part of the interconnected transmission network of ENTSO-E [1] for sustainable energy transmission. Alstom is dedicated to the development of infrastructure projects for clean energy.”

Alstom has been present in Greece since 1923, and is a key player in the local transport and energy markets.
