Interview with SUBARU

1. The 1.000 unit of the successful emission test system AMA i60 from AVL ETS, is delivered now. The client receiving it is SUBARU. How do you feel about this?

Congratulations on the achievement of 1.000-unit sales of AMA i60.
We are very happy to install the memorable 1.000th AMA i60 that is sold in global market.
We think that this achievement with an independent model numer was bulit by accumulation of proven performance and trust of AMA i60 and AVL ETS. It is equivalent to having had the official guarantee of the users in global market.
We would like to provide AVL ETS with feedbacks of disadvantage in use of AMA, and hopefully they help for the next 2.000-unit sales.

2. Why did you choose this test system AMA i60?

In addition to the key USP’s in chapter 3 below, the following facts helped us to make a final decision of AMA i60 installation.
- Increasing of proven performance in global market.
- Introducing systems in domestic automotive manufacturers and EPA.
We are explained at Tokyo City University internal combustion engine laboratory while watching the actual operation, and we could judge that there was no problem of the performance and quality of AMA i60 and the service of AVL Japan.

3. What are the key USP’s you see in this product?

The new gas analyzer, a compact module-style design, and the interactive graphical interface that supports all services and diagnostic functions are the decisive factors for purchasing.
In addition, the following factors were also important.
1. The compact design and front maintenance method that does not take much room.
2. The largely shorten time of the downtime of the device by module exchange at the time of trouble-shooting.
3. One device applicable to various fuels (gasoline, light gas oil, alcohol component)
4. How can you describe your relationship/partnership with AVL ETS?

We feel that we can build a good relationship with AVL ETS.
When we were explained at Tokyo City University about the usage and maintenance of the system by using the same type of analyzer, we could build a trust and could feel confident about purchasing the product.
Although there were some small troubles, the whole installation process went smoothly. Regarding the training, 2 engineers from GRAZ visited us and they provided us with careful, respectful, and detailed training. We were impressed that the training for the maintenance and precision control was well-supported.
After the installation, 2 minor problems occurred and we had a small trouble to fix them but there are no problems at this moment as a result that AVL Japan energetically supported us.

5. What are the key problems you are dealing with in emission measurement?
How can AVL ETS/AMAi60 help you to solve these?

The allowed emission volume is remarkably limited due to the reinforcement of the exhaust gas emission regulation, and the consumption of the alternative fuel is increasing as well.
In addition, we have some new requirements such as regulation levels for the number of the particles (PN) and the NH3 concentration, furthermore, the need of the NO, .N2O, and the HCHO measurement is also increasing.
We think that the expectation of the marketplace for AVL ETS products such as AVL i60 is growing to flexibly adapt all these requirements.

6. Regarding new engine technologies and new fuel mixtures how will you use the AVL equipment in this process?

We think that AVL ETS is helpful for our exhaust gas emission development in engine development. In fact, we are planning to install the dilution tunnel that can share gasoline and diesel. In addition, as well as analyzers, we are expecting in the good product line such as a transient EDM, a fuel consumption meter, an oil/water/fuel temperature control unit, and a PN analyzer.

7. How do you see your role in the future development for low emissions?

We are expecting that the measurement systems provided by AVL that has a great knowledge of the reinforcement process of EU exhaust gas emission regulation that is becoming more strict will give us a positive impact on our development system. We are also expecting that AVL will be our good partner for the future.

8. What is the key vision that SUBARU has for the next 5 years regarding low emission engines?

We think that the base emission reduction by a transient compatibility, a measurement precision improvement, an optimization of the atomization and the air-fuel mixture of direct injection engine are important. We also think that the establishment of the development technique to abtain the effective utilization plan of the catalyst and the evaluation of the catalyst performance is important.

The interview was held with Mr. Akira Ogura, General Manager 1st Power Unit Research & Experiment Department, Fuji Heavy Industries LTD, in Spring 2014.
