Heidenheim, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany, 2014/05/08 - Voith has been awarded a services contract for the extensive modernization of three hydropower generators at the Kettle Generating Station in the province of Manitoba in Canada. FSE: VO2A
The scope of supply for Voith Hydro includes the replacement of stator frames, new cores and windings as well as pole reinsulation and the installation of new coolers. Once the project is completed, each of the refurbished units will be rated at 120 MVA.
The Kettle Generating Station is owned by Manitoba Hydro and, with a total of twelve units and an installed capacity of presently 1,220 MW, is the second-largest hydropower plant in the Canadian province of Manitoba. The facility was commissioned in the early1970s and, after many years of reliable service, will now undergo gradual rehabilitation to continue produc-tion of renewable energy production for further decades.
Canada is one of the largest producers of hydropower: The installed capacity amounts to 73 GW and its share of the country’s total electricity supply is almost 65 percent. The country is also one of the most mature hydropower markets in the world: With an installed fleet of approximately 1,500 units and an average age of these facilities of around 60 years, the country offers great and enduring opportunities for the services and modernization business in hydropower.
Voith Hydro in Canada is well-prepared for these demands and offers vast experience with deep know-how in generator modernization at its center of excellence for winding and coil technology in Mississauga, Ontario.
