Milton Hershey School, a private residential school located in Hershey, PA, is offering the opportunity of a lifetime to 500 children in need from Pennsylvania and across the nation by providing a private education, safe nurturing environment, healthcare, clothing, food and countless activities at absolutely no cost. The School is planning to enroll 500 students during the 2007-2008 school year, marking the highest enrollment in its nearly 100 year history.
At a press conference featuring several hundred students, alumni, house parents and guests, MHS President John A. O’Brien, ’61, said, “This opportunity has the potential to change lives. I am living proof of the power of this home and school.”
Milton Hershey School is proof that schools like Oprah Winfrey’s recently established Academy for Girls can aid young people for years to come. MHS has changed the lives of literally thousands of children since its founding in 1909. Students get a free private education, free health care, access to countless extracurricular opportunities, free clothing and food, and the chance to break the cycle of poverty. As unbelievable as it sounds, all services of this residential school are provided at no cost.
Milton S. Hershey, founder of the Hershey Chocolate Company, and his wife Catherine, founded the Milton Hershey School. They had no children of their own and wanted to help orphan boys in need get a good education. He left his fortune to fund the school in perpetuity. Today, the school, located on more than 10,000 acres, serves more than 1500 boys and girls from 4 years of age through their 12th grade graduation, who are in social and financial need.
